Who you are

You insist that endings be conducted. Not dragged out, not softened, conducted: the last meeting held, the thing named, the person told. You cannot bear the slow fade, the friendship that simply goes quiet, the role you are still half occupying, the arrangement that dies without anybody admitting it died. Until it is said, part of you keeps standing in the old room, waiting.

You are also careful not to trash what you are leaving. You can finish something without deciding it was worthless, which is rarer than it sounds and is why people you have ended things with tend to speak well of you afterwards. What you want is a clear line, marked on both sides, with the good years left intact behind it.
