Who you are

You watch yourself from the outside while you are speaking. You can see your own face, hear the sentence landing, and adjust it halfway through if the room is not with you. Most people only work this out afterwards, in bed, replaying the conversation. You do it live, which makes you easy company and also means you are rarely all the way inside the conversation you are having.

The checking is aimed outward rather than inward. You are not vain. You are making sure the people in front of you are comfortable, and you would drop your own point instantly if holding it made somebody uneasy. That reflex earned you a great deal of goodwill young. It also taught you to find out what you think by watching what goes down well.
