Who you are

You keep promises to yourself in private. The early mornings, the money set aside, the habit you have kept for eleven years without telling anybody the number. Limits do not bother you the way they bother other people, because you worked out young that a narrow set of choices made properly beats a wide set made badly. Most of what you have came out of that one belief.

You never look like you are trying hard, which is partly temperament and partly deliberate. Strain is a private matter and you would rather people saw the finished thing. The risk is that nobody knows what any of it cost you, including the people who love you, and somewhere along the way you decided that mentioning it would spoil the effect.
