No god has suffered worse press. Centuries of conflation with later devils have painted Hades as the Greek Satan, and the portrait is simply wrong: in the myths he is neither evil nor a tempter, but the sober administrator of the one appointment nobody cancels. When the three brothers drew lots for the cosmos, Zeus took the sky, Poseidon the sea, and Hades the unseen realm below, and he ran it, the tradition agrees, with fewer scandals than either brother managed upstairs.
The Unseen Administrator
His very name was avoided, the Greeks preferring euphemisms, and the most enduring one is the key to him: Plouton, the wealthy one, lord of everything under the soil, the seeds, the silver, the gold, and the dead, all of it banked in the dark. Rome kept the title as Pluto. The underworld god was, quite literally, the richest figure in the cosmology, which is the old world's dry joke about where all assets eventually transfer.

Hades is inevitability personified, and the Greeks understood something the horror films forget: inevitability is not malicious. It is merely punctual.
Not the Devil
The contrast deserves its own paragraph, because the conflation distorts everything. Hades does not tempt, does not corrupt, does not collect souls by trickery or wish anyone ill; he does not even recruit, the clientele arriving reliably without marketing. The Greek underworld holds the good and the bad alike, with its Elysium and its punishments administered by judges, not by him personally. He is the registrar, not the prosecutor. The horns and pitchfork belong to an entirely different theology that later borrowed his address.
The Story Behind the Stories
Historically, Hades received almost no temples, not from hatred but from practicality: the Greeks reasoned he was the one god prayer could not sway, since his realm admitted everyone eventually regardless. The great exception was the mystery cult at Eleusis, built around Persephone's descent and return, which for a thousand years initiated thousands, Socrates' contemporaries among them, into rites that promised a better portion in his house. The god without temples thus quietly anchored antiquity's most profound religious institution: hope, lodged precisely where the records were kept.
What Hades Teaches
That the inevitable deserves an honest face rather than a demonised one, a teaching my colleagues have traced through Shiva's clearing and the tarot's card thirteen, and that this column's whole shelf of traditions keeps converging on: befriended endings govern better than feared ones. And that fairness, the same terms for every arrival, is found in the myths not in the bright courts upstairs, but in the house downstairs that nobody wanted to visit and everybody could trust.
