A phrase simple to the point of being a cliché contains an enormous amount of wisdom: nobody is bigger than God. Whatever name you give to the ultimate, the source, the ground of all being, the divine, the point is the same. Set against it, every human power shrinks to its true size. The mightiest empire, the most famous name, the wealthiest fortune, the most inflated ego, all of it is small before the whole.
This is not a thought meant to crush you. It is a thought meant to free you, and to keep you humble in exactly the way a good life requires.
On the ghats I once watched a wealthy industrialist wait in the same queue as a rickshaw driver for the evening aarti. The river did not part for either of them. My grandfather, standing beside me, said the Ganga has carried away bigger men than both, and lit his lamp. I think of that queue whenever my own importance begins to feel large.
The Right-Sizing of the Ego
The human ego has a way of inflating itself to fill whatever space it is given. Left unchecked, it comes to believe it is the centre of the universe, that its preferences are laws, that its importance is total. This inflation is the root of an enormous amount of human cruelty and folly.

There is comfort here, not only correction. If nobody is bigger than God, then no human tyrant, however terrifying, is ultimate. No worldly power has the final word. The bully, the oppressor, the arrogant, all of them stand under the same greater reality as their victims, and none of them is as large as they imagine.
For anyone who has felt powerless before human power, this is a profound reassurance. The thrones of the mighty are smaller than they appear. Above every human authority is one that none of them can claim to exceed.
The Equaliser
The recognition also levels the ground between people. If every human ego is small before the infinite, then the differences between us, the status, the wealth, the fame we use to rank ourselves, shrink toward insignificance. The famous person and the forgotten one stand in the same proportion before the ultimate.
This is why genuine faith tends to produce humility and a certain democratic kindness. The person who truly grasps that nobody is bigger than God finds it hard to look down on anyone, because they have seen how small all human greatness really is, including their own.
Living in Right Proportion
To live with this awareness is to live in proper proportion: neither crushed into worthlessness, for you are held by the same greatness as everything else, nor inflated into arrogance, for you are not the centre you might imagine.
It keeps the powerful humble and the powerless dignified. It dissolves the urge to dominate and the fear of being dominated. And it plants the ego back in the soil it came from, where it belongs, one small part of a vast whole, held by something immeasurably greater than itself.
Remember it the next time your ego swells, and the next time you feel crushed by someone else's. Nobody is bigger than God. It puts everyone, including you, exactly where they belong.
