Drop a frog into a pot of water that is already boiling and it will not stay. The story is always told this way. The heat arrives as an alarm, everything in the animal fires at once, and it is out of the pot and across the floor before anyone can reach for the lid.
Now start again with the same frog and cold water. It settles. The water is comfortable and there is no reason to be anywhere else.
Light the flame low.
The temperature moves so little from one minute to the next that nothing in the frog registers a change worth acting on. It is a fraction warmer than it was, then a fraction warmer than that, and each fraction sits well inside what the animal can absorb. There is never a moment that announces itself. There is never a line crossed loudly enough to be worth crossing back over.
The frog adjusts. That is the whole trick of the story. It is not that the frog fails to notice the heat. It is that it keeps meeting the heat successfully, right up until the point where meeting it is no longer possible, and by then the legs that would have carried it out are the same legs the water has been working on for an hour.
Nothing in the pot ever felt like an emergency. That was the emergency.
Most tellings stop there, with the frog boiled and the moral obvious. What they leave out is the part that makes it useful, which is that the frog was not stupid and was not asleep. It was doing the sensible thing at every single moment. Each individual adjustment was correct. It was the sum of them that was fatal, and the sum was never put in front of anyone for a decision.
That is how it usually goes. The job that got worse by degrees. The friendship that cooled over four years and not one week. The habit that moved by one glass a season. Nobody sat in front of a switch marked ruin and threw it. Everyone tolerated one more small thing that was, taken alone, entirely tolerable.
The Lesson of the Boiling Frog
Your alarm is built for sudden, not for gradual. Whatever in you reacts to a shock does not fire for a slow slide. That is not a character weakness. It is the instrument you were issued, and it has a blind spot you have to cover by hand.
Compare against the start, not against yesterday. Yesterday will always tell you things are fine, because yesterday was one degree away. Ask instead what you would have said about today if you had walked into it cold, a year ago.
Set the line before you are in the water. Decide in advance what would be too far, and write it down while you are still cool enough to mean it. A limit chosen inside the pot will move with the pot.
Where this actually comes from
The frog does not do this.
Put a frog in slowly heating water and it becomes agitated and climbs out, as any biologist who has been asked will tell you. The behaviour in the story is simply not the behaviour of the animal.
The confusion has a real source. There were nineteenth century experiments on how amphibians respond to gradual heating, and a few of them did report animals staying put. Those results came from frogs whose brains had been destroyed, which had nothing left to escape with, and the work was contradicted at the time by other researchers whose intact frogs left the water. The finding that travelled was the wrong one, because it made the better sentence.
We are keeping the story anyway, and saying this plainly, because the thing it describes is real even though the frog is not. People genuinely do fail to price slow harm. It is a good description of us and a poor description of frogs, and it has spent a century being repeated as though it were both.
